Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in waters off Tura Beach in the far south coast of NSW Australia

Time

I am not a fan of boats, and on this day, my friend decided to take me on a whale watching tour. We left the wharf at 5pm. The boat was loaded with people, and lots of them were photographers. It was raining, and the swell was huge, and I was freaking out on the inside! Once the boat had finally found a mother whale and her calf, the rain stopped and the swell settled down. I could relax and start to enjoy myself. Then this beauty started leaping out of the water. It was a bit like a game, trying to guess where the whale would leap next and having my camera set and ready at the right time. Mother Nature and pure luck helped me capture this astounding leap.

Lighting

I had to set my lighting to the conditions and then focus entirely on aiming at the right spot at the right time.

Equipment

Canon 5D mk4 with a Canon EF 70-200f/2.8 L series lens

Inspiration

Although im not a fan of being on the ocean, I had never seen a whale close up before, and I am always one to say yes to a challenge or adventure... so I went with the aim of trying my luck...

Editing

Highlights were lowered, contrast increased, and due to the greyness of the day, I increased the saturation.

In my camera bag

My bag is my tool kit, and I love everything in it! Im a Canon girl, and I carry a 5D mk3, and a mk4, 70-200 lens, 24-70 lens, 16-35 lens and 100m macro lens, as well as a 600 flash, a single strap and a double strap, a tonne of batteries and a little bag with camera batteries, sd cards and my remote control.. there's also extra little things I sometimes need like tissues, glass cleaner, chewing gum, bulldog clips (not sure why..lol) and butterscotches.. lol
