Location
The photo was taken at The Entertainment Grounds Race Track in Gosford NSW Australia.Time
It was taken in the early afternoon. I was lying in the grass, just to the right of the barriers, trying to hide so I didn't spook the horses. As the horses leapt out at the start of the race, I kept my finger on the shutter release button and this is what I managed to capture.Lighting
I had no out of camera control on the lighting, so I set my camera to the conditions as best I could just before the race started.Equipment
I used a Canon 5D mk3, with a Canon EF 70-200 f.2 lens.Inspiration
I had been working for The Entertainment Grounds for some time, shooting their events and race days. The CEO asked if I could create some photographic artworks to display on the walls of the Members Lounge and Boardroom. I was given free reign on what I wanted to shoot, and where I wanted to to shoot it, as long as I followed strict rules for my own safety, and the safety of the horses.Editing
The background of trees is a layer from another photo I had taken. The original background was a McDonalds carpark with hurricane fencing, which completely took away from the horses, so I replaced the background with something that would allow the true magnificence of the horses to shine. In my camera bag
My bag contains some wonderful treats! I am a Canon girl, and I have a 5d Mk3, 5D Mk4, 24-70mm lens, 70-200mm lens, 16-35 lens, 100mm Macro, 80-200mm and a 600 Speedlite.Feedback
Patience and preparation is key. I shot 3 different races to get this shot, and let me tell you, the speed at which these horses leap out of the barrier gives you a millisecond to get the shot. You must have your camera settings ready before hand, and I am 100% certain there is also a huge element of luck involved. I had an idea of what I wanted, but this result had me so excited!
