Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo while on a walk with my Fiancée at Springwater Conservation Area, Ontario, Canada. It was one last warm day before the cold of winter came in for 2020.

Time

This was taken about 2 pm EST. Partly cloudy with nice blue skies.

Lighting

I didn't do too much regarding the lighting besides adjusting the settings on my camera. I did wait until the sun was under a wispy cloud that slightly diffused the sunlight.

Equipment

I shot this on my Canon 80D with the stock 18-55mm lens. I had other lenses but this is the one I had on at the time.

Inspiration

I really wanted a nice shot of the wetland. As well, I love nature and landscape shots. So when the trail opened up to this opening, out of the trees we followed the trail onto this boardwalk. Right when the board walk was turning back into the forest I stopped to take a picture right in the middle with all the cattails, grasses and more.

Editing

I didn't do too much. Just minor things to bring out the colour of the sky and even out the lighting from ground to sky.

In my camera bag

What I normally have in my bag is my Canon 80D with my Canon 40mm prime lens for my quick snaps and a Canon remote trigger for those hands-free night shots. I have a Canon 300mm when I need those close ups or shooting far away. Then a Canon 18-135mm that came with my 80D for when I want to be a bit more flexible with my distances and shots. I also have a Canon 550EX flash with the magnetic Magmod kit with the bulb diffuser, gels and honeycomb attachments. One last gear this is a mini-tripod for quick on the go things but I do have a better tripod that I attach when I need it. On the survival side of things that I keep in my for when I am more in the wilderness I have a mini First Aid kit, a whistle, Canon charger, a Panasonic charger for my AA Ni-MH Eneloop Panasonic batteries for my flash, and a spare 64Gb SD card. I am prepared for a gig or a wilderness emergency.

Feedback

I recommend checking out your local conservation area and especially if it has a wetland space. If you can safely find an open space in the wetland without hurting the ecosystem, such as going far off the path then go for it and get creative on how to capture whatever is in your shot. Maybe bring some leaves, get close to a cattail or something. Most importantly, enjoy your time!
