Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Jerome Grand Hotel in Jerome, AZ. This is one of the coolest towns I have ever been too. The hotel dates back to the 1857 when Jerome was found and became a mining town during the Gold Rush. The hotel was originally a hospital. So much interesting history there.

Time

It was about 4 or 5 pm. We had just drove from Phoenix to Jerome, AZ.

Lighting

This is good old pure natural window light. I didn't even have a reflector.

Equipment

I used my Pentax K-70, with my Pentax HD 35mm prime Macro lens. No tripod, no flash, just me, my camera, and my subject.

Inspiration

We had just checked into the hotel. As I walked through the halls, rode to the third floor in the original 1926 Otis elevator, and entered the room, I could feel the history of this place in the air. When I was young I lived in a house that was built in the 1800's in Florida. When I walked into our room, I immediately noticed little things like the way the tiles were cut along the edges in the bathroom. They were all curved in the same way as my house when I was young, in a way that I haven't seen since. The bathtub, fixtures, and medicine cabinet all took me back to the house I lived in so long ago. Then we saw the rotary phone and my BFF who is the subject of the photo started being silly and picking up the phone, pretending to drink a bottle of liquor, and ultimately looking like he just received some heartbreaking news as captured above. I captured a series of shots during our silliness and tells a hilarious yet ultimately sad story that I can't help but feel must have happened often, so long ago in that very room. Ultimately my BFF and the location inspired these photos.

Editing

I did post processing in Lightroom and Photoshop. I converted the images to Black & White in Lightroom and adjusted the highlights. Then in Photoshop I added the Vintage 1920's coloring to match the era of our location and the "Wild Wild West" reputation of Jerome and the crazy situation of the series as a whole.

In my camera bag

My camera, my lens (which is the only one I own currently). I actually had two speed lights with me and soft boxes for them and a reflector but didn't use them until the next day.

Feedback

Be spontaneous. Don't take anything too seriously. Use your surroundings. Go to interesting places and really feel the history of where you are. Most importantly HAVE FUN!
