Behind The Lens

Location

This photo of my daughter was taken in the back yard on the deck. If I showed you a straight-out-of-camera image of this space you wouldn't believe it. LOL!

Time

It was around golden hour, but it was a raining and very overcast.

Lighting

I used one studio flash with a 55" umbrella with a diffuser. Thankfully I have a covered area on the deck because it was raining on and off while I was shooting.

Equipment

This was taken with my Pentax K-70, with a Pentax HD 35mm 2.8 prime macro lens, camera was on a tripod.

Inspiration

My daughter inspired me to take this photo. I took a similar photo of Stephanie Bynum in Nashville, TN while attending a workshop with David Molnar. My daughter loved the picture and wanted to recreate it. So that was the inspiration behind the photo. It's a great look for portraits when you have to shoot in overcast or rainy conditions.

Editing

Of course there was post-processing. I usually put portraits first in Lightroom, then Photoshop. For this particular image, I did not use Photoshop at all. The light was a bit too close to my daughter while I was shooting so I did do what I could to reduce the highlights on some areas of her face and also added some fill light to her left side.

In my camera bag

I shoot Pentax and have since the Pentax K-1000 film camera in the 70's and 80's. I still have one and it works! However, these days I use the K-70, with a HD 35mm prime, 2.8 macro lens. It is so versatile and SHARP. It forces me to be creative and move around my subject. I find it takes AMAZING portraits. :)

Feedback

The key to this look is shooting outdoors with a studio strobe and putting your shutter speed the highest you can go without the shutter clipping the image.
