I took this photo from my kayak on a little lake near my home. Weather willing, I usually kayak there once a week and I always take my camera.Time
I like to get to the lake before sunrise, while it is still dark. This photo was taken as the sun was rising when the mist was still heavy on the lake.Lighting
We were expecting a sunny day without clouds so the natural light was beautiful as the sun was rising. Because it was so early, and the light was still soft, I used a high iso.Equipment
I shoot with the Olympus OMD EM1, Markii. I love the lighter weight of micro 4/3 cameras. In fact, I bought the first micro 4/3 camera, by Panasonic, when it went on the market. I've been shooting micro 4/3 ever since. I always use my Olympus M.Zuiko 300mm prime lens when I kayak. It's comparable to a DSLR 600mm so I am able to keep some distance between myself and the birds. I just received the M.Zuiko 100-400mm for Christmas so I will take it to the lake next time I go. I'll be able to get in closer, but also zoom out for birds in flight.Inspiration
I was close enough to the bird that the fog wasn't between us, so I was able to get detail and sharpness, but have the thick fog in the background. It was just luck that I paddled around a corner and came upon the heron posed perfectly!Editing
I started post-processing by taking the photo into Topaz DeNoise AI. Micro 4/3 cameras are notorious for lots of digital noise at high isos due to the smaller sensor size. Then I corrected the white balance with the dropper tool in Lightroom and adjusted blacks, whites, contrast and clarity. I sharpened the bird and did a little cropping to make sure my subject was on a rule of thirds line.In my camera bag
When I kayak I just take my camera with lens in a dry bag with a spare battery.Feedback
