Travelling to the north west of Western Australia on assignment, my first stop was the dish at Carnarvon. This was more than a 9 hour drive from my home in Perth (around 900km) . The OTC Satellite Earth Station Carnarvon was established in Australia to meet the needs for more reliable higher quality communications for the Apollo space program. The Carnarvon Tracking station was commissioned in 1964 and operated for 11 years and supported the Gemini, Apollo and Skylab programs. The location is the home to the Carnarvon Space and Techology museum - the humble exterior reminds me very much of the TARDIS as it keeps going and going with much space history and memorabilia located within. You could easily get lost for hours within it's depths. I very much enjoyed my short stay in Carnarvon and will certainly be back - I want to get some more footage there for my tasks but also have some ideas about what additional equipment to deploy. This first visit to the fantastic location deployed 3 cameras.
