Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at Blair Castle international 3 day event on 23 August 2007, I am a horse owner myself and love to photograph these magnificent creatures.

Time

This was taken at 14:40, horses were in the warm up arena and were doing final practice and warm up in preparation for the Dressage phase of the competition.

Lighting

It was a nice sunny August afternoon with good lighting conditions, I was able to use an ISO of 200 shutter speed of 1/320 and aperture of f6.3

Equipment

I used a Canon EOS 1D MK II using a canon 100 - 400 zoom set at 210mm

Inspiration

I love horses and take any opportunity I can to capture there beauty, power and elegance, this was the first day of three I spent at this event photographing the horses, I have actually managed to get a press pass so I had good access to go where others could not!

Editing

I decided to do some spot colour on this in Photoshop, I used a black and white adjustment layer and the used the brush tool to paint over the bridal and the horses eye to reveal the original colour. I was very happy with the results and had a large canvas print made that is still in my home today. Just recently I decided it might look good if I could make the background black, so again in Photoshop I used the quick selection tool and made a selection of the background, when happy with that I did a select and mask and then painted the background black and then deselected. I then turned the opacity down and continued to paint round the edged of the horse to blend the background and the horse so it looked seamless.

In my camera bag

I have a Canon 7D MKii and a Canon EOS 1-D MK II with a Canon 100mm macro, 10 - 20 mm wide angle, 24 - 105mm zoom and a 100 - 400 zoom lens. I also carry a wireless remote and selection of ND filters.

Feedback

To get this sort of effect you just need to find a suitable photo and just play around with the technique, don't start with anything to complicated, start simple and have fun.
