Lichtenberg Castle is a renaissance building that cannot be missed on a hilltop protruding into the valley in the Fischbachtal. This square has been in use for centuries, initially with a typical medieval castle, then expanded into a Hessian state fortress and finally expanded into today's castle in the 18th century.
The present castle was built between 1570 and 1581 in the renaissance style. It was the first palace in the Renaissance style in southern Hesse and thus style-defining.
It was built on behalf of Landgrave Georg I of Hesse. The castle was originally built as a widow's residence, but also served as a residence for the landgrave's family in emergencies. For example at the time of the plague.
The castle is a three-winged structure in the shape of a horseshoe. The oldest part is the east wing, which was built in 1516 and then adjusted to the other two components.
Today Lichtenberg Castle serves as a museum. The current owner of Lichtenberg Castle is the State of Hesse.
