I took this photo in Western Oregon in the spring time, when wildflowers are first blooming. This photo is of Oregon Iris (Latin name Iris tenax). Named for the tenacious strength of its grass-like leaves (which were reportedly woven into cordage used to snare large game), the vibrancy of its purple flowers reflects this strength and lends to the common name of "purple flag."
