I took this photo during the day (despite the black background) using a flash. This was in early spring in Western Oregon when fiddleheads are just starting to unravel on ferns. This particular fern is a bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) which is pretty common in my part of the world.

This photo was taken in a park near Corvallis, Oregon on a nice spring afternoon. That being said, it could have really been taken anywhere! Ferns like these are pretty wide spread.Time
I took this photo in the afternoon while out on a walk.Lighting
While this photo was taken during the afternoon and it was light out, I used a flash to get a nice dark background behind the fern and really highlight the geometry and color of the fern.Equipment
I took this with a Canon 7d Mk1, an 50mm lens, and a Youngnou speedlite flash with a flash diffuser.Inspiration
I just loved the way that the fern fiddlehead was unfurling and honestly was just out exploring and playing with a new flash!Editing
I didn't do much post processing on this photo. Just a little bit of color correction and cropping. In my camera bag
I always have my Canon 7d Mk1 with me - it is a good camera and pretty light weight. I often only take my camera, one or two lenses, and a flash with me. This particular day I only brought the camera body, my 50 mm lens, and flash! I like to take pictures while I am on walks and so I often pack quite light!Feedback
My advise would be to just get out on walks and slow down! There is beauty everywhere in the woods when you look! If you're particularly interested in fern fiddleheads - spring time is the perfect time to find these as they will be unfurling everywhere!
