The castle dates from the early 11th. century, and with its mighty defenses has withstood all the storms of time. During the Thirty Years' War, the stronghold was besieged and occupied several times, but it withstood all attacks without suffering major damage. The castle was inhabited until the end of the 18th. century, when the cost of maintaining the structure left a significant hole in the budget. The walls and towers, the halls and vaults gradually fell, and like so many other fortresses and castles, the Lindenfelser fortress did not escape its fate. The fortress was first garrisoned and then served only as barracks for a few soldiers.
Finally, the mighty structure was sold for demolition in 1779. Everyone was allowed to break down and take a wagon full of stones for a few coins. The high lords diligently carried out the destruction of the castle, which had nevertheless deserved a better fate, and so Lindenfels castle, which had withstood all the storms of the time, fell prey to the spirit of the times.
