Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Italy in Florence, which is obvious thanks to the famous "Ponte Vecchio" which spans the Arno river.

Time

We were walking around in a light rain looking for a restaurant when we crossed this river. The light was amazing and the sky almost dramatic. While my fiancee protected me from the rain with her umbrella, I tried to capture this moment by stabilizing my camera on the parapet of the bridge that we were crossing. This photo was taken on September 7, 2018 at 11:41 a.m.

Lighting

Sometimes we have the chance to experience magical moments. This was the case with these low clouds which created veritable wells of light which revealed the colors of the city. It was relatively dark and without a tripod, I set the sensitivity to ISO 400 with an aperture of F / 13. Frankly, I was not sure I would take this shot and it was a very good surprise when I returned from vacation and saw this photo on the computer. A somewhat dramatic image with a nice perspective with the bridge standing out against the gray of the clouds and the river.

Equipment

I used a Canon 1200D (EOS Rebel T5 for our American friends) with an EF S-18-55mm lens) as well as a polarizing filter. And that was all I had for equipment at the time.

Inspiration

Above all, the light then the feeling of being in a painting and therefore a little out of time. I like when I can give inspiration to the paintings I love in a photo. Besides, we had an appointment to visit and were going to visit the office gallery a little later in the day.

Editing

Yes and it's because of this photo that I started using Lightroom. I wanted the image to look like I remembered it, so I spent hours trying to achieve it. Besides the image processing to recover the details of the clouds and the banks, I also slightly adjusted certain colors (notably the yellows and the reds) to create a certain harmony with the blue of the clouds. On the other hand, I have always wondered if I had not gone too far with these treatments.

In my camera bag

I no longer have my Canon 1200D which was replaced with a Canon 90 D and I added some lenses like an EF 17-55 EFS f / 2.8 IS USM as well as an EF 50m f1.8 STM. This for urban photography. Plus a tripod for landscapes and a SIGMA 150-600 F / 5-6.3 for sea scenes and animal photos. Plus a cleaning kit, spare batteries, one or two microfiber cloths.

Feedback

Hard to say, except that you have to be ready to seize the moment and for that a light equipment (a camera, a lens) is often a great help. This photo was taken in less than 3 minutes in the rain and using an improvise prop in place of a tripod. It's partly luck and partly a reflex to have.Trying is better than regretting.
