Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the North West Scottish highlands looking towards the Fisher Fields range

Time

This was taken at sunrise

Lighting

It was a tricky, contrasty scene of bright sunlight streaming through the dark clouds.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D850 DSLR with a 16-35mm F4 Nikon lens. A Gitzo tripod and ball head.

Inspiration

I love the Scottish highlands and couldn't believe my luck when the clouds broke and allowed the rising sun to break through and illuminate the granite and lochans.

Editing

I usually do some minor global adjustments in Lightroom eg. dropping highlights and raising shadows. Not much of this was required given it was essentially a HDR image. Further post processing was done in photoshop including contrast adjustments and sharpening.

In my camera bag

I'm lucky to own a Nikon D850 and a selection of Nikon lenses with a range from 14mm to 500mm. On mountain trips I usually only take 2 lenses i.e. 16-35 F4 and my rather heavy 70-200 F2.8 which I love. I have some Lee filters incl. ND, grads and polariser. I have an old Series 3 Gitzo tripod and ball head.

Feedback

Plan, plan and plan. I would also say that one has to be prepared that you may not get the shot and that once a photographer accepts this a lot of the pressure is taken off. This usually allows a calmer more enjoyable approach.
