Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my backyard at my home in central Wisconsin. The Rose of Sharon shrub that this Ruby-throated Hummingbird was visiting was grown from a cutting from my great grandmother’s yard in Chicago.

Time

I would wait until the sun had cleared the trees that surrounded our yard and sit on our deck to photograph birds in the yard during the late summer.

Lighting

This was taken in natural light without any added lighting.

Equipment

This shot was taken with a Nikon D800 utilizing a Nikkor 200-500mm lens.

Inspiration

I have always enjoyed the outdoors and birds. As a child, my mom would keep a pair of binoculars on the kitchen window so she could look at the birds in our yard.

Editing

This photo did not require much post-processing and it was taken before I knew how to do much post-processing. The image was slightly cropped and lens corrections enabled in Adobe Lightroom.

In my camera bag

When going out birding or hiking , the Nikkor 200-500mm lens has been great; I don’t leave home without it.

Feedback

Patience! To be able to get this shot, I sat still for quite awhile with the camera held up so as to not disturb the birds. Hummingbirds are incredible flyers and can move in all directions. Schedule enough time for your attempt to not be rushed.
