The black-tailed prairie dog lives on the green parts of the plant, especially grasses, but they also eat fruits and insects like grasshoppers and even occasional carrion. They first eat all the vegetation around the burrow to remove any shelters from predators.
The black-tailed prairie dog is a day animal. Under normal conditions, it is active all day, but in hot weather, the prairie dog comes out of its den only in the morning and evening. During the day he hides from the sun in the underground corridors. In cold winters it stays in its den for several days, then goes in torpor for several days . The prairie dog then feeds on a layer of fat they have built up in the fall.

The only other time I've seen prairie dogs is when we lived in Colorado. They were EVERYWHERE!

That is a big family of prairie dogs. I haven't seen that many clustered together before. Nice capture.
