Behind The Lens
Location
I had just finished a photo assignment in Oahu and then took advantage of the location, rented a car and drove around Oahu and Hawaii big island for three weeks. This image was taken at the Mauna Kea Observatory, Hawaii island during sunset. The elevation of the place gives you a great perspective above the cloud line. Because of its ideal location in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, the observatory is the best place on earth to observe the night skies. Mauna Kea has a number of astronomical research facilities and large telescope observatories. The night time star gazing here was one of the most unforgettable sites I have ever seen.Time
6:30 pmLighting
The lighting was a bit challenging because of the contrast between the sun in the clouds and the ground. I shot on manual mode where I could adjust accordingly.Equipment
Canon 5D Mark III and a canon 24-105 mm lens. I knew I needed to bring a lens that would be able to shoot wide.Inspiration
I climbed up to the top of this summit an hour before sunset and waited. I spotted this couple sitting on the edge and instinctively knew that this was a great moment, so I took a few pictures of the two. What I like about this image is the positive emotions that it invokes and the overall peacefulness of it.Editing
Post processing was minimal, done in Adobe Lightroom. Darkened the clouds a bit, added a touch of saturation. In my camera bag
When I am on photo assignments, I carry two Canon bodies, one is full frame sensor, the other a 1.6X sensor. My lenses are a 24-105 mm lens, a 70-200mm lens, a flash and battery pack. When I am shooting personal and travel work, I can pack much lighter. For that I bring a Canon 7D and use a Sigma 18-250mm lens.Feedback
