Behind The Lens

Location

Ham House and Gardens has a little garden patch next to the coffee shop. It's a lovely little nursery type garden with a large variety of flowers and plants that attract bees and other insects. It is especially pretty in spring/summer when most of the flowers are in bloom.

Time

It was early afternoon on a cloudy day, which meant the bright yellow stood out in the warm-ish gloom.

Lighting

It was cloudy, which softened the light a bit and also made the brightness of the yellow tints pop. I didn't use any external lights or flashes, just the natural daylight with my white balance on Auto.

Equipment

Just a Canon Rebel T5i with a 55-250 mm lens to zoom in nice and close. No tripod or flashes. It was light enough to not need a tripod for stabilization.

Inspiration

It was a pretty eye catching flower: bright yellow on a mostly gloomy day. I thought it the yellow petals would make a nice contrast with the darker centre.

Editing

I dropped the saturation a fraction to make it a tiny bit less bright. That's all.

In my camera bag

Camera with my 55-250 mm lens on, an 18-55 mm stock lens and spare batteries. That's about it.

Feedback

Decide where you want people's eyes to be drawn to in the photo and make sure to have that part/feature well in focus. Then try focussing on different parts of the same composition and compare afterwards. Camera screens can be misleading.
