Out of interest why didn't you choose to put the center of the buoy in the center of the image?

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo last year while out for a walk with my dad at Sampson State Park. The park itself actually has quite an interesting history. Formerly functioning as an Air Force and Naval training base during WWII, and then as the Army Depot nuclear munitions storage facility during the Cold War, it's now a state park, military museum and marina, located on Seneca Lake in the heart of the Finger Lakes.

Time

I took this late in the afternoon, just before the golden hour.

Lighting

When I took this photo, it was more about my interest in the subject than anything else. Attention to lighting came later in post-processing, where I tried to manipulate light in a way that would hopefully make the subject stand out and the colors pop.

Equipment

I just used my Nikon D750 with a 24-120mm f/4 lens.

Inspiration

Again, interest in the subject. I liked the nautical vibes. I've lived on the lakes my whole life, so it's a familiar theme. The color also captured my attention. When I took this photo it was late winter/early spring when life and color had yet to return, so the bright orange was quite striking and visually appealing.

Editing

I definitely did. I completely changed the background, choosing blue to both enhance the orange as well as to fit with the nautical/lake theme.

In my camera bag

My Nikon D750 and usually all of my lenses (24-120mm f/4, 35mm f/1.8, 85mm f/1.8, macro 105mm f/2.8), my speedlite, transmitters & receivers, and a remote shutter release. Though now that summer's coming back I suppose I'll be adding some filters and tripod for some more landscape work.

Feedback

Photograph anything you find even remotely interesting or eye-catching. Don't become too fixated on finding the most interesting or exciting subjects to photograph that you miss out on all the creative opportunities photography offers us.
