Behind The Lens

Location

Here is a photo of Devil's Tower in Wyoming while on an outdoor Western trip during COVID in the summer of 2020. I am mostly a self-taught, hobby photographer and enjoy experimenting with my Cannon T5i Rebel and a variety of lenses. I especially love nature and landscape photography.

Time

After leaving the Rapid City area of South Dakota, getting our directions a bit confused and enjoying at least one unplanned route, we continued toward our planned first stop for the day, this giant monument in the middle of Wyoming prairieland. My mostly patient husband had stopped on the side of the highway for me to take several of many "first" shots of Devil's Tower. We eventually entered the monument park and drove around the monument with hundreds of other outdoor, fresh air, seekers and decided that the time spent in standstill traffic was not beneficial as we would only be able to drive to the base and then would not be allowed to get out of the car, so we parked for a while to enjoy this spectacular view. The shot was taken about mid-day, not the best time, but I was satisfied with the photo and eventually we were on the road again. Above that, I am honored to be selected for this photo. Thank you.

Lighting

I wanted a crisp, clear image, and was working on practicing different settings and my limited stock of lenses. I can only aspire to remember quickly those things I have learned from the internet and from my own experimentation. Taking multiple shots of the same image with different settings instead of the Program or Auto settings, has helped me tremendously. If I could only remember combinations as quickly as others, I would be happy. But I have realized that the more I shoot and force myself to experiment, the more I learn.

Equipment

I did bring my tripod, but this was a hand-held shot taken with my Cannon 5T1 Rebel and a Tamron 16 - 300mm f3.5 - 6.3 Plaza Drive lens with a MGX Prime 67 MM UV Pro Master filter. I also had a lens hood attached to help with the harsh mid-day lighting.

Inspiration

I wanted to take a photo that would show the striking details of the Devil's Tower that were visible for miles, but even more stunning close up.

Editing

I used no photo editing software for this photo. I was pleased with it as it was. Also, great editing software is something I do not have extensive access to.

In my camera bag

Everything I own related to my Cannon 5Ti is in my bag. As you can tell, I don't have a lot of options. I have the standard stock lens, two telephoto lenses, and one wide angle lens. I also have lens hoods for each one and other than general equipment, that's about it.

Feedback

I wish I did have advice for you. The only advice I do have is to be patient.
