The monkey puzzle tree owes its name to one of the first Westerners who saw the strange tree and said: 'Climbing this tree would puzzle a monkey ..' The sharp scaly needles on trunk and branches would make it very difficult for a monkey. Actually, in the area where the Araucaria araucana naturally occurs, the Andes mountains in Chile and Argentina, there are no monkeys at all, but it kept its name.
Its other name serpents pine", denote the snake like branches covered with sharp scaly needles.
