Behind The Lens

Location

This photo had to be taken in a completely dark room with no outside ambient light. I chose my laundry room at home which was once my dark room in my film days, where I had perfectly sealed all light from getting into the room including light from the up stairs floors.

Time

Because the room is totally sealed from all outside and other ambient light , it really didn't matter what time of day it was taken , although I chose late morning where I am most awake mentally.

Lighting

Lighting was supplied totally by portable strobes on light stands in a totally dark room.

Equipment

The camera was a Nikon D90 DSLR mounted with a Nikkor 105mm f2.5 AIS manual focus lens with a screw on 4X macro filter attachment . All mounted on a tripod with a 3 way pan and tilt head. The water was in a clear wine glass with a gift bag mounted behind as the background. Experimenting with back grounds can produce many different abstract results. A medical glass eye dropper was used to produce the droplets of water at random in the dark while I used a slave trigger to fire the strobes simultaneously during a several second bulb exposure in total darkness. Distance from subject to lens was measured first using a printed ruler to aid in focusing which was done manually.

Inspiration

I always loved the idea of simple setups producing great abstract art forms. I've done similar photos in the past in my film days with home made soap bubble contraptions.

Editing

I use Lightroom and Photoshop. These programs give me the tools to bring out the best in my images.

In my camera bag

I have a large "do all", camera bag with everything imaginable in it. I then usually pick and choose which gear to bring that is catered to my shoot, especially on locations where I have to carry that gear to the area I am shooting. I have at least 6 or seven different camera bags that I use, all with a specific purpose for each type of shooting, whether it is macro, landscape or wildlife as subjects .

Feedback

Yes this type of photography involves being very creative and very patient. Sometimes you may take 50 shots to get the right one you are looking for. Luck also has a lot to do with it , especially the timing of the strobe flashes with the eyedroppers to capture that moment and type of water drop. Remember everything is done in the dark , the only light is from the strobes when exposing. If you need to make adjustments you must turn the lights on some where and then turn them off to shoot.
