Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my home balcony garden in Bangalore, India. I had just got this beautiful daisy plant the earlier day. Couldn't keep this beauty from being captured.

Time

It was in the morning around 8am. Bangalore has a foggy, cloudy weather in the morning with a chill in the air. I poured my coffee and went out into the balcony to this beautiful sight. It was subtle, elegant, gracious yet delicate and I could stop myself from capturing the sleeping daisy.

Lighting

It was still foggy outside while the sun had started clearing the fog. My balcony faces the west, so the sunlight was lighting up the fog in the background and helped in adding a nice depth to the photo. I am a amateur photographer and it presented as a perfect opportunity to play and learn about the depth of field.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D5300 with the allrounder Nikkor 18-140mm. It was natural morning light while the fog acted as a diffuser.

Inspiration

I had just walked out into the balcony with my coffee. It was only the day before that we had got this beautiful daisy plant with a blooming flower. I was amazed at the sight of the closed flower while the dew drops subtly enhanced the beauty of the delicate darling. The sight was just waiting to be captured. I never knew that the daisy closes at night. After a bit of research, I found that they depict innocence and purity alongside toughness. The original meaning of the word Daisy comes from Day's Eye - they open during the day when the sun comes out and close up at night to sleep and rest while protecting the nectar from insects. Hence the title "Sleeping Beauty".

Editing

I am not so adept with post processing and am experimenting and learning the techniques. This photo had minimal post processing in Snapseed where I corrected the white balance a bit and added slight sharpness.

In my camera bag

I generally carry my Nikon D5300 with 3 Nikkor lenses - 35 Prime, 18-140 and 70-300. I also do keep a Canon SX720HS for its bridge and zoom capabilities. As for videos and super wide angles, I have my GoPro Hero7 Black.
