Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Matetsi Zimbabwe along the Robins road.

Time

Very early in the morning, it had literally just started to turn daylight when I first saw a mother and two cubs waking purposefully up the road. I shut the car off and could hear a lion roaring nearby, hence the move out of Dodge! I slowly drove up on them being sure not to pressure the already nervous cats. Eventually they let me close with them until I was probably only 50m away. By now it was probably 30minutes after sunrise.

Lighting

Luck! Pure and simple, the one cub chose to cross over the road so I had almost perfect early morning light.

Equipment

Canon 7D MkII, 100-400mm lens, no tripod but a sandbag on the window, no flash.

Inspiration

I am always inspired to photograph the big cats, especially when they are active and even more importantly when they are not disturbed by my presence.

Editing

Cropping and a little Lightroom.

In my camera bag

I always travel with two cameras, one fitted with a zoom, one wide angle, Africa is so dusty that switching lens is a huge risk. I wear a cotton carrier system, my cameras are 'protected' from the dust by a simple cover but if it means taking or missing a shot due to a sudden breaking and dust cloud, I take the shot every time. Extra batteries and SD cards are a most, sandbags and tripod, cleaning equipment.

Feedback

Early bird gets the worm. I left Vic Falls at 0430 to be near the Hwange boundary at daylight, hoping for leopard or lion, lucking out with cheetah!
