Behind The Lens

Location

Lilac- breasted rollers are one of our most common but striking birds, no safari is complete without capturing a photo of these birds. They are usually spotted perching on a dead branch from where they launch themselves at flying insects. This photo was taken from a safari vehicle in Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe.

Time

Late afternoon.

Lighting

Lucky, we just happened to be traveling in the right direction and the bird took off and flew in the perfect direction.

Equipment

Canon 7DMkII, 100-400mm

Inspiration

The photo is a little out of focus, but I think that is what makes it interesting as that gives it a rushed feeling. In fact the previous photo of the bird perched on a branch was perfectly focused but did not garner the same interest. I would feel naked in Africa without my camera and as I always say it is impossible to verbally create the picture of true Africa, a camera helps a little.

Editing

Just some cropping.

In my camera bag

Spare batteries, spare SD cards, tripod, wide angle 24-105mm, x2 adaptor (hardly ever used) spare camera body Canon 6D. Remote release.

Feedback

Patience, spend a lot of time practicing simply by focusing on birds and then trying to anticipate their take off and flight direction, make sure you have shutter speed as high as possible and continuous shooting engaged.
