Behind The Lens

Location

During the thick of the pandemic in early April, fox kit season was also in full swing in southern Ontario. A friend had told me about a den in a culvert of a subdivision so I staked out(with the homeowners permission!) In my car to wait for them to emerge.

Time

Late afternoon around sunset, and the den was in the shade, making it a bit difficult to shoot.

Lighting

The natural lighting was pretty poor, but I was able to bring out a bit of the detail during the editing process.

Equipment

Pentax k3ii and 300mm da* f/4 handheld (using the car window as a tripod)

Inspiration

The pandemic closed most parks and public trails and my work, so I had plenty of free time to drive around and look for fox kits!

Editing

I use Adobe camera Raw in Photoshop, and utilized a heavy gradient to bring attention to the fox kits cute face. I also desaturated the greens and bumped up the oranges a but, and used radial/brush adjustments to brighten up certain areas like the white on his chest and his eyes/face.

In my camera bag

My Pentax K3II, my 300mm, 100mm 16-85mm and 1.4x Teleconverter and my Ricoh GR III, and some extra batteries. I usually have a tripod handy as well, but I find this usually covers everything!

Feedback

Patience! I was fortunate enough to know the fox kits were in the den, but it took 3 hours of waiting in my car for them to actually show themselves.
