Captured with a Nikon D90 and Sigma zoom lens. I saw the contrasts in the water and the play of the light on it. The person is a part of the landscape and how we relate to the sea. It may be overly dramatic, but that's what it meant to me. The sepia-like tone was applied in Lightroom. I used one of the packaged black and white profiles, added a sepia toning preset and adjusted it all by eye in the Edit controls.

Behind The Lens

Location

We were on vacation in North Carolina at Holden Beach. It's a small residential island, and a great place to relax.

Time

I didn't record the exact time. It was about an hour after sunrise. I get up early every day at the beach just for these times.

Lighting

The sun provided the main lighting, and I shot directly into the sun. Bright light sources throw metering systems off. I knew I wanted dramatic tones. I also know my equipment well and I knew what my Nikon would do.

Equipment

Nikon D90 and a Sgma 28-70 f2.8 zoom. I hand held the camera. I use a tripod on still subjects, but beachcombing is like street photography to me, and like the freedom of a small camera in my hands.

Inspiration

I'd been watching the waves come in and out for an hour, the water receding into pools, reflecting the light. I liked the near-far relationships with the sky, clouds, the fisherman in the surf, and the pools close to me. I do not fire away with a motor drive and hope for the best. The best never really happens like that. I watched the scene through the viewfinder and waited, looking for the light on the water and the shading to be perfect, or as close to perfect as I could see. I took a couple images. There is a horizontal one of the scene, also. In my opinion what makes this photo are the tiny waves at the bottom, caused by the water on the sand. The movement follows a C shape, from the sky top, to the fisherman, then curving right, going to deep black, at the lower right. I wasn't "thinking" about all that. Hopefully by now, after so many years responding photographically to the world, I just react visually to a scene. I may think about it later, but usually not much. The photograph becomes a thing all to itself and no amount of words or thoughts will make it any better or worse.

Editing

It's an obvious departure from reality. I work in Lightroom now most of the time, but I used Photoshop Elements for this image, to adjust exposure and contrast. The sun is blocked. No detail there, but the clouds were great and blocked enough sunlight to create some contrasty texture. Photoshop Elements has a sepia filter with a slider. The brownish tones just seemed to work better to me than a neutral black and white. I don't keep good notes. I've tried to duplicate the tone, and I can't now, unfortunately.

In my camera bag

I carry less now than ever, and as light as possible. For this photo, I had the Nikon D90 and a Sigma zoom lens. If I am roaming, I carry one camera and a couple lenses that cover a "normal" range of view. I like a wide angle view more than a telephoto view. Today, in 2021, if I am on a job shooting real estate or doing stock photos, I carry two bodies; a Nikon D7500 and a D3400, with 3 to 5 lenses, SB flash, remote release, and a tripod. If I am playing street photographer, I have a Sony A6000 and the kit lens, a 16-55 zoom, or a Sigma 19mm f2.8 which is tack sharp. I have e-mount adapters so I can use my Nikon AI-s and D lenses (not the DX) on the Sony in manual and aperture priority. The Sony A series are great, and the Nikon lenses pair well with the APS-C cropped format, and they handle well. If I play nature photographer I carry the D7500, a 60mm f2.8 Micro-Nikkor, 10-20, and a 55-200. I keep a point and shoot around at all times.

Feedback

Philosophical: Patience, patience, patience. Watch. Observe. Immerse yourself in the scene. Meditate. Technical: Having any camera with you is much better than wishing you had one.
