Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in one of my favourite places in Belfast, Northern Ireland. In the Cathedral Quarter featuring the popular Duke of York pub in Commercial Court.

Time

This was taken on Saturday 23rd May 2020 around two o'clock in the afternoon. I love this photo taken as I wandered around my favourite area of Belfast in these unprecedented times. I was in an area that would normally be buzzing however today it was eerie and shut down. Peering through these gates provides a poignant reminder of life before lockdown. Albeit life at a distance, it felt dark and prompted me to wonder if life would ever be the same... The light in the distance provided a dynamic colourful illustration that life will return in the future.... This is my hope!

Lighting

The light helps draw the viewer into the picture and gives a sense of hope that life will return to a form of normal. Life where we are standing looks eerie and dark but a sense of hope the light represents a return of happiness and fun times with family and friends.

Equipment

I used a Fujifilm X-T30, with a 18 to 55 mm lens.

Inspiration

I wanted to take photos that explored lock-down particularly attempting to capture the current atmosphere of life with COVID-19. Even though at the moment we are in social isolation ,which can feel very eerie and lonely, it's important not to forget memories of times of happiness with family and friends. There is light on the other side of the darkness which will bring fun and joy once again.

Editing

It was taken as one shot and then I used lightroom to adjust the shadows and highlights slightly.

In my camera bag

I normally have a Nikon D7200 with the following lens - Sigma 70mm to 200mm lens, Nikon 10-24mm lens and a Nikon 35mm lens. I have 3 legged Winston tripod. A Lee 100 filter system with ND filters, stopper and polarizer and I have a shutter cable release.

Feedback

I encourage others to just get out and try an area of photography that you don't normal shoot. I am usually out taking landscapes along the costal routes in Northern Ireland. I have started to try to get get my eye into street photography as traveling cities is something I love doing. I am an Australian that has moved to Northern Ireland so city breaks has sparked an interest in street photography. I am a self taught photographer so get out and just shoot.
