Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in my home town just prior to the first Lockdown, on a damp morning. The curviture of the slabs deliniates a roundabout in a pedestrian area wher only buses are allowed entry to. And is also the main entrance to the towns High Street, which is the main shopping area.

Time

This was taken at approx 9:10 am, after I had dropped my wife off at the dentist for her appointment. Rather than sit in the car, i decided to take a little walk and see what I could capture. I knew the damp bricks of the paving would look "all shiney" with the rain and converted into black and white, so it was just a case of finding the right composition

Lighting

The light was soft and flat, with the shop lights giving an extra depth. There was also a spot of rain in the air, noticable by the ladies wearing jackets with their hoods up. I wasn't holding out much hope for any good shot, giving the short time I was up the town for, and the weather conditions.

Equipment

My standard 18-55mm kit lens and my Nikon D610. I didn't have my tripod on the day, it wasn't worth while for a short 15 minutes shoot, hence the higher ISO

Inspiration

The benches and how they bend the same way as the roundabout forming a double curve. Giving you an inclination of something important or a great view to just relax and perhaps have some lunch. Or waiting for friends to come and join you for a bite to eat, or rest while out shopping.

Editing

Just a few minor tweaks of the levels in Lightroom and a mono conversion. Looking back; an increase in exposure, shadows, blacks: contrast, clarity and dehaze adjustments as well as fine tuning the mono conversion sliders.

In my camera bag

When out shooting, I don't really carry a bag as I tend to stick to the single lens that is on my camera at that time. I do make a decision prior to leaving home about what length i want to shoot at as that restricts me to shooting certain shots. PLUS it also gives me an opportunity to go back at a later date with my other lens if something doesn't work. What I have found is that by carrying everything you have and having the chance to "change", increases your laziness and doesn't make you think about what you are taking in any other way. Don't get me wrong, there are times when I wish I had my other lens with me and am cursing myself, however it does give an added dimension to what I shoot

Feedback

For this, my advice is don't be afraid to change viewpoint or use settings that you don't use very often. For this, I had to crouch down for the perspective and to be able to show the link between the seats and the paving stones. And as it wasn't a bright day, my ISO had to be increased slightly as I normally try to shoot at ISO 100 or 200 outdoors. There are times I may up the ISO to 400 if I am in a forest or darker area. It's also a good idea to NOT put to much expectation on a shot like this, because you simply don't know how things will line up. I don't think that the shot would have worked "better" had there been people on the left hand side of the image, or more people in the frame in general. Sometimes it is just a case of in the right place at the right time. Plus, you can always revisit if you think the image you have doesn't work
