Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken about 2 miles from a little village in Dumfries and Galloway called St Johns Town of Dalry. It is located at the side of the road and something I can across by accident. As a driver for a local supermarket, that's one of the perks of my job, being able to take pics/scout locations while working.

Time

I shot this around 3pm, after having a little gap between deliveries. I had parked in a lay by about 100 yards away, and as I walked up the road, spotted the tree. These little discoveries that I come across are what makes my job great.

Lighting

Other than a nice mid afternoon sun, nothing special with the light. Guess I was in the right place at the right time.

Equipment

I used my D3100 with the 18-55mm kit lens. I firmly believe that no matter what camera and lens combination you use, anyone has the potential to see a great image.

Inspiration

I cant say, as I didn't set out to take any image in particular, more about what I could find. When I spotted the tree, I liked the way the branches had grown as if they had been blown by the wind.

Editing

Very little, minor tweak of levels and mono conversion. I had originally planned on a colour image, until I wondered what it would look like in mono. After the conversion, I preferred the mono better than the colour

In my camera bag

I have upgraded from my D3100 to a D610, and kept the same 18-55mm lens. I also carry a 70-300 Sigma Macro lens. Also in my bag is my 2nd hand Sekonic light meter, 2 flashes along with trigger and receivers, a small tub with cleaning items in (cloth, brush, wipes). Along with a few spare batteries and memory cards, you know, just in case.

Feedback

Be prepared and always practice. Although I didn't set of with the intention of capturing this specific image, when I came across it, I know that it was an image I had to take. There are times when I go out just to see what I can see, and get something like this; and others with the intention of capturing something and nothing works out. Even when things aren't working out, i'm always trying to improve my composition and shooting techniques. Every trip is a learning experience for me, and that is what makes it interesting
