Behind The Lens

Location

I took this in Flagstaff Arizona and the old Killip School. This was after the Museum Fire and the entire Sunnyside neighborhood has K-rails and sandbags due to the threat of flooding.

Time

Early to mid-morning, you can see the shadows in the bottom are from the sun being in the East.

Lighting

The lighting was surprisingly harsh for this show but shooting this with an Autel Evo 2 drone helped elevate and bring a bit more depth to the photo. By using the drone though I was able to lengthen the shadow in the bottom which makes it look like something big is approaching from the dirt.

Equipment

It's a drone shot with the Autel Evo 2 8K camera. That drone just takes amazing photos and videos and is a dream to fly.

Inspiration

I've been in this neighborhood for 20+ years and to see the changes and how things are so much different is always interested. When I took this photo it was a combination of nostalgia for my elementary school coupled with the raw look of what we as people go through to protect our property and children.

Editing

I did, I used a flipped the color temperature on this photo to take it from an innocent school with a flood barrier to what looks more like a post-apocalyptic hideout. I might have been watching a bit too much walking dead during quarantine.

In my camera bag

I try to take my Sony a5100, my GoPro, Mavic Mini, Insta one-R, and my DJI pocket 2 with me. You just don't know sometimes what you might capture or what small spaces you want to get a video/photo from.

Feedback

Just shoot it, and play around in post. I'm not a great photographer by any means but if the shot looks good to you, it will look good to others as well. Have fun with photography and the results will speak for themselves.
