Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Cunningham Falls, Md.

Time

The photo was taken in the morning after the golden hour.

Lighting

The location of the falls did not work well for the golden hour, so I had to wait for the sun to light the falls. I had recently bought some ND filters and was trying them out.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7500, Nikkor 18.0-140.0mm f3.5-5.6 @42mm, 5.0 sec, @f/29, ISO 100. I was also using an ND filter and the camera was on a tripod.

Inspiration

I wanted to take some long exposures that day and hoped to see something worthwhile at Cunningham Falls. I liked the way the water fanned out and the depth that the rocks on both sides provided. I would have preferred not capturing the limbs of the trees and the shadows in farther up the hill.

Editing

Not a lot, cropping, exposure and contrast adjustments, some color temperature adjustments (warmer tones), some dodging and burning (to try to lighten the shadows and darken the highlights, and finally I used a radial filter and brushes to cool down the tone in the water.

In my camera bag

At the time I only owned a small bag so I had my Nikon D7500, two lenses the Nikkor 18-140 and Nikkor 16-80mm. On this day I had 2 batteries, I normally would carry 4, since long exposures using the live view burn through batteries. I also had some polarizing and ND filters and the tripod.

Feedback

Simple advice is to get out and take pictures. If you like long exposures invest in some ND filters. Find a falls small or large, even a stream with rocks and fast-moving water. The day I took this picture I also took "Rocks at Cunningham Falls", "Water", and "Water Fall". I would also occasionally look back at your older photographs, you may find something that you initially passed on now looks good.
