Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in "La pelosa" beach in Sardinia, Italy, close to Stintino. This is the the last strip of land in the north western part of Sardinia. Until recently it was a wild and lonely area; in recent years the cement and the massification of tourism has stolen his charm. Luckily the crystalline sea is still green and blue-green in color

Time

I was just arrived in Porto Torres together with my son and my daughter after a night of sailing from Civitavecchia. They were roughly 6.30am

Lighting

Sunrise and sunset light are the most appraciated light for photographer: warm and oblique light that emphasizes the details and the texture of things. This is why I put the big rock in the foreground: the contrast between the illuminated and the shaded part is an important element in the composition. This kind of illumination is recalled from a distance from the tower, also illuminated in the same way. I also decided to include the sun in the composition to introduce a compensation element in the image to balance on right the composition. It was a risky decision because the exposition could be seen compromised. The fact that the sun had just risen and thanks to the veiling of existing clouds, managed to compensate the global exposure well

Equipment

Sony Alpha 7R - Lens Laowa 12mm - No other equipment

Inspiration

Many years ago I went to Stintino with a friend of mine that unfortunately some years after he died. This summer I wanted to go back with my children already knowing that I would no longer find what I had lived with my friend. Nonetheless, I wanted to take an unbreakable photo that was the memory of my experience before with my friend and now with my children

Editing

RAW files contain all the information possible. They are like mother cells from which different "tissues" can be generated. I always follow a six-step process that includes: white balance and other basic decision (in Camara RAW), light treatment, decision on the sense of reading the image, revelation of details (in PHSP)

In my camera bag

I try to stay light as much as possible: Sony ALPHA 7R - Laowa 12mm lens- Vario Tessar 16-35 f4 lens - neutral density filter - not always but when it is necessary tripod Rollei C5i

Feedback

Beware of too much light that forces you to use the machine manually to have total control of the diaphragm and the times to try to balance the difference in brightness
