This photo was taken while on a camping/kayaking trip to Cheraw State Park in South Carolina.Time
We had returned from kayaking in the cypress grove and decided to take a late afternoon stroll around the bottom end of the lake before cooking dinner.Lighting
Even in the shadows from the trees in the late afternoon the brilliant blue color just popped against the tiny white pebbles. I spotted this butterfly from a distance and felt fortunate that it didn't fly away before we could get close.Equipment
As always when walking around in nature I was carrying my Canon SX400 IS Powershot. This was a handheld shot from very close up.Inspiration
Aside from being my favorite colors the contrast of the blue on white really caught my eye. It also just happened to be a species of butterfly that I had been searching to see.Editing
What you see is what you get. This is exactly what the camera picked up on auto-focus with no post-processing. I was close enough that no cropping was required. In my camera bag
When I am out and about in nature I just carry my Canon PowerShot. It has a tremendous range for close-up or far away. I've even had good luck with this camera sitting in the kayak bobbing in some gentle waves.Feedback
To me, the main key to finding a shot like this is to be observant and to be prepared to act quickly. Butterflies don't sit still for long!
