Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Sunset Beach, NC. It is a small island just north of the South Carolina border. A friend of mine lets me stay at her house on the island during the offseason. Sunset Beach is a quiet place with a lot of older folks owning most of the houses. There is also a bird sanctuary on one end of the island. In spite of its name I always get better sunrise photos than sunset photos.

Time

Every time I visit I am always one of the first people on the beach. I love to watch the sunrise from start to finish and photograph all the changes. This photo was taken at 7:25 am on 10/15/2016.

Lighting

I wanted to capture the sun just as it first appeared hence the name "Emerging from the Ocean". Obviously, all the lighting needed is provided by Mother Nature.

Equipment

This photo was shot with a Canon SX400 IS on autofocus. The shot was handheld as I was walking along the beach. As far as what I lend to the equipment, I must confess that I am a novice.

Inspiration

I have always been a big fan of beautiful sunrises. It is such a peaceful time of day and it works out well with my being an early riser.

Editing

Almost all of my photos are as is with nothing more than some occasional cropping. This is especially true of sunrise photos. I don't see the need to adjust anything. What you see is what I shot. I regret that this photo was cropped across the bottom due to a time and date stamp. I only recently discovered that my basic Windows photo program has the means to remove them. I have also turned off that feature on my camera. I feel that I lost something in the leading edge of the waves that added to the photo.

In my camera bag

I have a small case with a shoulder strap that is just big enough to hold the camera, charger, download cord, a mini 4" tripod, extra battery, and an extra SD card. I don't carry a tripod when I am out walking but that will change somewhat since I just purchased a new one.

Feedback

To begin with, you have to be willing to get out of bed before the roosters crow and you have to be patient and attentive to the constant changes as the sun makes an appearance.
