Mother of the Man!

So I thought it's Mother's Day and why not dedicate a post to my own mother. And this thought was followed by all the cheesy words that lots of us write as a dedication to our mother on this day. Then the golden key came into scene- 'Delete' and that made me think what she really deserves today.
Well she definitely deserves all the credit that I can give her as a son. For, as a single parent she has seen rough days. But what she gave me today is something beyond a mainstream gift. Today she gave me, her son who is a grown man the insight of empowerment. And that has liberated me in such a way that my coming days will define me. She gave me freedom from the traditional Indian family shackles that a son is not a good person if he fails to live his parents dreams. My mother did something unbelievably amazing today. She told me- "Giving birth to you was my choice. To be my son wasn't yours. So it would be wrong of me to expect you to lead a life as per my plans. You need to go chase your dreams no matter how crazy, how wrong they sound to the world, for you should not regret your life when you look back. And that's how I want you to remember me. A parent who set you free..."
This has given me such a sense of confidence, self belief along with a slight sense of self doubt as to what should I do, now that I am encouraged for it, and mostly a sense of freedom not from my parent but from everything else that has held me back in life. It has made me realize that when people expect things from you, they can't hold you accountable for it, as it is them who expected it and not you who asked them to believe it. You can be warm enough for people to expect things, but to reciprocate or not is your own choice. Today I a grown man is proud to have been raised by a mother like mine.
