I recently started learning more about photography (about 4 months ago) after years of simply doing point and shoot. I won my first contest this past February. After watching some tutorial videos I decided to go to the Dallas zoo and experiment. This is one I took that day.Time
This was at the Dallas Zoo around 2:00 pm. Partly cloudy day but a perfect day for lighting and shadows.Lighting
Honestly, I am just happy it turned out the way it did. I didn't actually start learning about white balance until about 3 weeks ago. I hate to say it but it is kind of a lucky shot.Equipment
I used my Nikon D610 with no other equipment.Inspiration
My brother-in-law is a great photographer and specializes on animal shots. My mother-in-law absolutely loves giraffes. I wanted to take a pic she would love just to out do my brother-in-law. Yes, I am just a bit competitive.Editing
After I got home I added this to Lightroom and did some slight lighting alterations and made the background a little more blurry that it already was so that the giraffe would be more prominent. In my camera bag
I usually carry my some filters and a micro lens in case I see a nice up close and personal opportunity. I also take a tripod on most photo outings.Feedback
The only advice I would have is to keep learning and more importantly keep experimenting. To me lighting is what keeps me motivated. I find it fascinating that the camera sees light a bit differently than we do. I have a lot to learn.
