The medieval city of Tienen Belgium
During the reign of Henry I and his successors, Tienen experienced rapid economic growth. During this period, the city acquired the right to hold a weekly market day (1220). This stimulated its development as a commercial center. Its location on the important east-west axis also made it possible to participate in international trade. In addition, the Brabant cloth industry was in full expansion during this period. The population increased steadily and the first fence quickly became too small. Since neighborhoods began to form outside the walls, an expansion of the city territory was necessary.
