Behind The Lens

Location

The image was taken in the grounds of Elvaston Castle, Derbyshire. I was lucky enough to be able to take part in an organised photo shoot inside the castle and another student told me about the herons so went back the next day to find them.

Time

The image was taken mid morning, my friend and I had walked around the water in the grounds without spotting them and were on the way back to the car when we spotted a heron come in to land in a tree, followed shortly by two more.

Lighting

It was a fairly bright day but with a plain grey sky.

Equipment

This was shot on a Panasonic G9, using the 75:300 Olympus lens. Hand held but luckily had a bridge to brace against for stabilisation.

Inspiration

I have not had the opportunity to shoot these great birds in such natural surroundings before.

Editing

Post processing was just adjusting levels and cropping in lightroom.

In my camera bag

My backpack usually contains the Panasonic G9, along with my go to Leica 12:60mm lens which I love! Along with the Olympus 75:300mm and Panasonic 25mm.

Feedback

i was lucky to get a good shot hand held at full zoom however I would recommend taking a tripod if at all possible!
