Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on the Suffolk coast at Southwold. Here I am under the famous pier, thankfully the tide was low so able to gain a viewpoint straight down the pier without getting too wet.

Time

This was taken early evening just as the sun was starting to set, my favourite time of day.

Lighting

The lighting is completely natural, I just loved the way your eye is drawn to the end of the pier, the uprights leading your eye to almost a window of light at the far end.

Equipment

This was shot on the Canon 600D using the 70:300mm lens. A tripod was essential for the long exposure and gave me the chance to get the uprights framed correctly.

Inspiration

I love the strong leading lines of this image that take you through to the final window of light at the far end of the pier. I had been inspired by similar images and was keen to put my own stamp onto an similar image.

Editing

Post production was limited to a slight crop to make the image more symetrical, difficult as the uprights are offset. I also adjusted levels slightly to boost the colour in the rust and sea.

In my camera bag

I have now moved away from Canon and gone to a mirrorless system. My weapon of choice now is the Panasonic G9, and the must have lens, the Leica 12-60! I also have the Olympus 75:300mm for when I need just a little more reach.

Feedback

Research your location before setting out, including tide times and weather forecast. Wrap up warm and don't forget the tripod. Above all enjoy what you are doing!
