Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken by the community pool in the development where I reside in South Florida, USA. I made it into a full photo shoot on a summer day, by the pool, featuring my daughter.

Time

This photo was shot in the mid afternoon hours. It was very warm that day, and my daughter wanted to go to the pool.

Lighting

The lighting on this image was the easiest part of the whole shoot. Because it was the mid afternoon, during the summer months, the sun was still very high in the sky and there was plenty of natural light to be had. No additional lighting was necessary. I actually prefer when I can use strictly natural light and do not need to be concerned with any fill.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D300 with a Nikkor 18-70mm, f/3.5-4.5 lens. No other equipment was used for this image.

Inspiration

There were a couple of inspirations that made me want to take this photo. First of all, the day was perfect and natural lighting was plentiful that day. At that time my daughter had just begun to wear eyeglasses and I have always felt that bespectacled women are exceptionally photogenic. I feel that a women sporting eyeglasses enhances her beauty. Additionally, my daughter enjoys when I take pictures of her not only because she gets to pose, but also because as a budding photographer herself, she learns a technique or two in the process.

Editing

I am a purist. That is I got into photography at the tender age of 13, back then, there was no such thing as post-processing. What you saw is what you got. I did have some liberties, when I shot black and white film, and developed/printed that in my own darkroom. But, even with that, my "post-processing" options were limited. Mainly I just cropped an image, with the occasional burning/dodging. With that said, even in the digital age, there is very little post-processing for me. I will crop, maybe adjust the white balance, and change a color image to black and white or sepia. The only post-processing I did here was convert the original image to black and white, and cropped out the unnecessary background.

In my camera bag

I normally have my Nikon DSLR, which I am now shooting with a D3500, the 18-55mm Nikkor lens, the 70-300mm Nikkor lens, a spare battery pack, spare SD cards, and a Nikon Speedlight flash. If I need to travel lighter, I use my Olympus PEN E-PL8 mirrorless DSLR, 14-42mm Zuiko lens, 40-105mm Zuiko lens, Metz Mecablitz flash and spare SD cards.

Feedback

I primarily like to photograph people, pets, aircraft and landscapes. I always make sure that I have the proper equipment for the occasion. With people, you have to make your subject/model feel comfortable, with extra care being taken with children/teens or those who may be a little camera shy. If a model is tense, it will show in your finished product, at best as maybe a half-hearted smile and at worst...who knows. Also, make sure that the person does not blink, as this is a natural reaction to the flash firing, or perhaps the sound of the shutter "click". Don't be afraid of doing a do-over, (especially when using digital) this will also put your model at ease and reduce anxiety, which will ultimately yield a superior result.
