Location
I took this photo from the window of an airliner in-route to San Francisco from Ft. Lauderdale. We were at our cruising altitude in an A320 of approximately 35,000 feet. It was a little cloudy below the plane and the Rockies shrouded in the clouds, spoke to my inner creativity. I am thinking that we were over Colorado at this point, according to the GPS on the seat back screen.Time
I took this photo in the early morning between 7-8 am Mountain Daylight Time.Lighting
The lighting was 100% natural light. The camera I was using had an auto flash, which I had turned off prior to taking the photograph. The lighting inside the plane was such that there was no risk of a reflection from the window.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon Coolpix S6300 digital point and shoot camera. My professional equipment was in the overhead bin and inaccessible at that point in time due to both my girlfriend and another passenger sleeping.Inspiration
I am a student pilot, thus I have always enjoyed aerial photography. I have also always enjoyed taking pictures where I am at a substantial altitude, whether it is in an aircraft, a mountain observation area or an observation deck on a skyscraper. Additionally, the mere majesty and beauty of the Rocky Mountains was the main inspiration for taking the photo. This was also the first time I got to see the Rocky Mountains for myself. To me this photo encompasses my love for aviation and nature. I have other similar photos in my library as well.Editing
Post production, I used photo editing software in order to convert the image to black-and-white. I also tweaked the white balancing on the image. No other changes were made to the image. In my camera bag
Usually I work with my Nikon D300, with 18-70mm lens, and Nikon Speedlight when needed. I also typically have a Tamron 200-500mm zoom as well. I carry my Nikon Coolpix S6300 for a back-up or when the D300 is not readily accessible. I also am using film, the type of pictures I am taking will determine which film camera I use at that time. My primary go-to camera is my Bronica ETRs with 75mm f/2.8 lens, prism finder, 120 film back and Gossen Luna-Pro light meter. I also frequently use my Minolta XG-M with 45mm f/2 Rokkor or Pentax Super Program with the Winder MEII and 50mm f/2 SMC-A lens. I own a large array of both digital and film equipment. For film I generally use black-and-white, either Ilford HP5+ or Kodak Tri-X.Feedback
Merely being a passenger on an airplane affords a wide array of potential masterpieces, because of the altitude of the aircraft, and the mere fact a lot of "real estate" is covered on a coast to coast flight like the one I was on. You cannot plan for pictures like this, regardless of your level of photography expertise. The bottom line is seize the moment to create a memorable image.
