Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo several years ago when visiting the St. Louis Zoo.

Time

It was taken in the natural light of later morning. I had arrived right when the zoo had opened, and the reticulated giraffes were towards the front of the zoo, if memory serves me right.

Lighting

In this setting, the environment determines the outcome. The enclosure, luckily, had a good mix of open spaces and trees, so there was decent opportunities to capture the giraffes in the available sunlight.

Equipment

The camera I had at this time was my workhorse Nikon D70

Inspiration

I am fascinated by most any animal, and they interact with each other and with other animals. What better way to capture animal interaction than with a mom and baby. I could tell the baby was fairly new, as the umbilical stump was still present. Knowing I may not get another chance to see a giraffe this young again, I observed Mom & Baby as long as I could.

Editing

This image has very little post processing. Maybe a boost in the color, adjusted exposure... not much else

In my camera bag

I typically carrie a Nikon D7000 and a D7100. I usually have my favorite 2.8 70-200mm not far away, if it’s not already on a camera! I also keep a Nikon B500 point & shoot nearby for back up.

Feedback

Patience! Wild animals are not going to pose for us, so observation and patience are key. Animals are not going to wait for you to get that camera out. Be ready while you are observing. That way, you don’t miss a thing!
