Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Fatima, in Portugal. Fatima is one of the most religious places in Portugal, home to a couple of the most beautiful churches and place for two of the most massive and best know pilgrimages in Europe. The picture itself is from one of the sides of the "Aleluia Hotel", right next to the Fatima Sanctuary.

Time

The photo was taken mid afternoon. It had just stopped raining a couple of minutes ago and the sun was appearing behind the clouds.

Lighting

It had just rained for a few minutes... a shy sun came up and cast a soft light on the silver facade of the building. As these silver waves are a bit detached from the building I thought the shadows casted by the waves were a nice contrast to the shining of the "mirror" side of the waves.

Equipment

I just used my Canon EOS 700D and my 18-55 lens.

Inspiration

The combination of the inspiring movement of the waves, plus the light and shadow made me look and think there was something appealing there, and I could make a cool abstract out of it.

Editing

Nothing too complicated... I just turned it to black and white, adjusted a bit of the contrast and cropped just the slightest bit.

In my camera bag

At this moment, in my bag I have my Canon EOS 700D and three lenses: 18-55mm; 70-200mm and my latest 10-18mm. Besides that... the usual, extra memory cards, battery and cleaning kit. I almost never bring the tripod unless I know I'm going to shoot in low light or lanscapes.

Feedback

The best advice I've been given, and the one I always try to leave when asked is: look... then observe. Try to look beyond the obvious and try to match the photo to what's in your head.
