Location
This lady was doing her "Fan" dance in the Rundel Mall in central Adelaide, South Australia. The Mall is full of buskers and performers. Her white suited husband joined her occasionally as they danced together. There were many people walking around as its a shopping precinct and I had to crop some out of the photograph to emphasise the "Fan" dancer.Time
At 1:43 pm in late September (Spring in Australia)Lighting
The day was bright and sunny but the light was subdued and mostly reflected as the Mall was narrow with tall buildings on either sides.Equipment
I generally carry my Canon EOS M50 with my 15-45 mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM kit lens and my 18-150 mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens. I was shooting handheld in this instance. My shutter was fast enough 1/125 to get a sharp photograph of the dancer yet capture the movement of her fans.Inspiration
Firstly, I like taking photographs of interesting people and street photography. I was attracted to the uniqueness of what she was doing and an expression of a, possibly, tradition dance form.Editing
I did a little bit of post processing with Adobe LR to give the image a bit of punch using a preset I have.In my camera bag
I carry my Canon EOS 5D Mk IV around most times with a Tamron SP 24-70 mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 and my Canon EOS M50 with the Canon EF-M 18-150 mm f/3.5-6.3 SI STM. I also carry my EF 70-200 mm f/2.8 L IS II USM, my Canon 1.4x Teleconverter and my Canon EF-M to EF Adapter. This gives me the flexibility to get extra reach with either the 5D Mk IV or the M50Feedback
Try and be at locations and at times where there is a lot of activity. Be observant and look for opportunities to photograph unusual and interesting subjects. In this instance with the fan dancer a wave to her to acknowledge I appreciated her for what she was doing while I took her photograph. I shoot manual but take a few practice shots at your location before you start to get your exposure correct and try and get as open as you can with your aperture without loosing too much depth field. Also, subject to your light, use as fast a shutter speed you can unless you wish to introduce some blur to capture movement as I have done in the photo.
