This is two photos layered together. Both images were taken in Isla Mujeres, Mexico in the cemetery off Calle Adolfo López. It’s a really special place to visit, if you’ve never been there it’s worth a trip.Time
This was taken at the brightest time of the day just before high noon. It was an absolutely gorgeous day and the bright white of some of the crosses against the blue sky really drew me to choose to go back there at that hour. The blue almost sparkles.Lighting
One thing to know about Isla Mujeres is that there is no bad lighting when it’s sunny! It’s sunny everywhere. This cemetery is packed very tightly and it helps to get “get low”.Equipment
This was all my iPhone. The iPhone is has a great camera, but other apps for the iPhone are even better.Inspiration
I’m inspired by cemeteries, I always have been. I like the ethereal quality of the tombs and the possibilities of not really being alone there but being surrounded by spirits. I like to layer images so that some of the spiritual aspects are suggestive but not overt, much like the spiritual beings that I’m positive we’re lurking about that day. I also enjoy what makes people comfortable in their view of the afterlife - this cemetery was an example of comforting those that are left behind, even me.Editing
The post processes was only to take two images and play with them in the Diana App until I got the exact feeling I want to evoke. I wanted the cross with Jesus on it to fade and be but a suggestion and the app helped me achieve just that.In my camera bag
iPhone. Sony a7 is, a variety of lenses for the a7 plus a lot that were not intended for it with adapters. I have some film cameras a TLR reproduction that’s fun and a variety of film toy cameras.Feedback
Never leave home without your phone at a minimum! There are endless possibilities with image layering - the results are always unexpected and interesting.
