Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my house. It was sitting in a vase on a shelf beside the back door (which will become important when we get to the lighting).

Time

It was midmorning in the spring.

Lighting

I live in a highrise in the south on a lake - the only one in my area. In the spring the lighting is just unreal. I have a sliding glass door and on this day it was open and the light that was coming in fell on that Magnolia in such a way - it was dreamy. A Magnolia is already dreamy as it is, but the way the light touched it created the creamyness that you can see in the image.

Equipment

I just used my trusty iPhone for this one - no flash, nothing fancy.

Inspiration

I'm a quintessential southern lady that loves her Magnolia! My Step-Son brought me this flower and since it had just been picked the stamen's were still perfect. I knew it had just opened that morning - the aroma is unreal! The whole experience was beautiful from the gift of the flower to capturing it. By the next day, it was already turning brown and the stamen's had dropped. The Magnolia has but a moment of perfection.

Editing

Not a bit, but zoomed in on the middle.

In my camera bag

Oh all sorts of things - toy camera's. My mirrorless Sony and a variety of lenses and always my iPhone!

Feedback

Do not wait to capture a flower like a Magnolia. Walk up to a tree and get that shot. They are special flowers and the perfection of the bloom lasts for just a little while. While you're taking the photo, lean in and breathe in the aroma, it is enchanting.
