This photo was taken on our family boat in the middle of big water Lake hartwell on the South Carolina side.Time
This was an ordinary day of playing hooky from work to go striper fishing on the lake, where we live. It was November so normally is is the time of year where the days are glorious, and the skies are a perfect Carolina blue. But on this day, it was quite cloudy and drab. We had been fishing since about 5:30AM and by 10:30AM we ahd not had a bite all morning and were on the move from one fishing spot to another.Lighting
As I mentioned it was a drab day but sometimes on drab days, they can have a special difused light that creates a great tone to everything. As we were sitting in the boat, deciding on what our next move ws goingto be, I just started snapping pictures of our lures and hooks because I could see that the way the light looked it just created this beautiful glow that made them shine. Not shine in the way they would in the sun but just a glowing - it caught my attention.Equipment
This photo was just one of those in the moment shots with the phone that I had at the time, my iPhone 6. Nothing fancy. I this image, I was really knocked out that you could see the barb on the hook so clarly and that the iPhone 6 could show that so clearly. That is when I started to really recognize the power of those devices.Inspiration
I am an agler and love the outdoors. I take photographs of the things I see in the natural environment. In all seriousness, this images came out of sheer boredome and frustration of the striper fish deciding to be most uncooperative on a November morning when they should have been jumping in the boat! Fishing and Photography are a lot alike, you win some, you lose some.Editing
the only thing that I did here was make it black and white. The reason I did this was because as I mentioned the day wad dreary and the image was nearly washed out in color; it just did not work in color. When I made it black and white, it popped, and I knew I liked it much more. I did not do any more to it that that.In my camera bag
I have all sorts of thigs that I I used: I never leave home with out my iPhone. But I also have a Sony A7III with a whole host of lenses from Sony lenses and a Lensbaby, Rokinon, Samyang, Nikor with adapters. I've got a twin reflex film camera and some other toy film cameras I play with - it is all depending on what I want to do. I use the film camera to play with layering images which is one of my favorite things to do.Feedback
My advice is to take lots and lots of photos and experiment with color and black and white. Take pictures on rainy days as much as you do sunny days. I love a cloudy day for diffused light. Give it a try!
