Behind The Lens

Location

Teignmouth Beach in Devon, UK.

Time

Around about noon

Lighting

A very dull day which was quite overcast.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D810 on a carbon fibre tripod with a geared head. All locked up and the shot was taken with the mirror up mode to maximise sharpness.

Inspiration

This sea groin is right next to the pier in Teignmouth. The ships were amazingly just in the right place when I took the shot. So no retouching required at all.

Editing

No, just sharpened the image and took out sensor dust spots. I don't retouch my images, I prefer to get them right in camera first. Usually only use Dodging and Burning tools if required in Photoshop afterwards.

In my camera bag

Three Nikon bodies, a film based Anniversary F5, A converted D800 (to infra-red only) and a D810 for colour work. I mostly shoot landscapes with a 21mm prime Zeiss lens, but also have 24-70/50prime/85 prime/70-200/80-400mm. I always shoot with a carbon fibre tripod and geared head.

Feedback

If you have an old mirror based body like mine always use mirror up to slow down your shooting procedure and maximise sharpness. I generally shoot at F8 to help this.
