Behind The Lens

Location

The image was taken at Durdle Door in Dorset in the UK. I had travelled there specifically to shoot the arch, but when I got there it was a force ten storm so my original plans went awry. The only thing I could do was shoot in the lee of the arch out of the wind, so placing my camera on a tripod with a ten stop ND filter on the lens I stopped down to get a thirty second exposure.

Time

Around 11am in the morning

Lighting

Glorious bright sunshine in-between massive storms

Equipment

Nikon D800 with a24-70mm lens on a Manfrotto tripod with a geared head.

Inspiration

Many photographers have taken amazing images of the Rock arch at Durdle door, I wanted to try something slightly different, the storm pretty much gave me no choice in any case....

Editing

I converted the colour file to black and white inside Lightroom and switched the profile to Adobe Monochrome to get a broader range of mid-tones

In my camera bag

Two Nikon bodies, one infrared and the the other normal. I use the same lenses for both and occasionally put in an anniversary F5 for film.

Feedback

Don't give up in a storm, look for the quiet moments in-between to capture great skies and long exposure moments like mine
